They Shoot, They Score!

School-age 1

This month at RisingOaks Early Learning | Saint John Paul II, School-age 1 has shown an interest in hockey. Using the connectors, the children built hockey sticks, which later expanded into them playing games of table hockey. The children came up with multiple constructive ideas on ways to build a hockey stick by taking their knowledge of different hockey players and the types of sticks they use to build their own. We had some building hockey sticks for the players that run centre, defense and generally move up and down the ice, and we had a few build thicker hockey sticks to represent the goalie’s hockey stick. A few children, such as Aeddan, used their imagination to build their own version of a hockey stick, adding extra sticks and wheels to make hockey sticks with special powers. We had sticks that could shoot the puck across the room with its super strength and sticks that had special blocking powers. Once the children had their hockey sticks, they were ready to play. Using the tables in the classroom as their ice rink and a circular connector as their hockey puck, the children played one on one with each other to see who could score a goal on the other. The winner of the game continued on with a new player and the children continued this process until they crowned a winner or wanted to restart the game. The children used great sportsmanship as they played, taking their losses and commenting on shots they thought were great.
