Let's be Doctors!

Preschool 1

While observing the children engaging in nurturing play with dolls and babies, Fatima noticed a strong interest emerging around care routine and medical themes. In response, I borrowed a doctor’s kit from another room to support and extend this interest. As soon as the kit was introduced, the children eagerly immersed themselves in role play, exploring the tools and engaging in rich, imaginative scenarios. This spontaneous play provided a window into their understandings of health, self-care and empathy. Carina, while gently brushing a baby dolls tooth, confidently shared “I’ve been to the dentist. I brush my teeth all day so there are no bugs in my teeth” Her statement showed a strong awareness of dental hygiene and a developing sense of responsibility for personal care. Emmett proudly declared he has two toothbrushes, prompting Finley to contribute that he also has a toothbrush at home. Asal took turns with her peers as they brushed the dolls teeth. Penny F quietly cuddled her “sick” baby, displaying empathy and gentle caregiving. Nearby Emmett and Tong Tong were intrigued by the doctor glasses, experimenting with how they looked and worked. Their engagement reflected curiosity and symbolic thinking. Finley and Hazel were especially fascinated by the stethoscope, pressing its button repeatedly to “listen” to heartbeats. Their excitement and repeated use suggest a strong interest in cause and effect, as well as a budding understanding of body systems. I wonder if the preschoolers would show the same care and curiosity when treating animals. Exploring a veterinary clinic role play or incorporating animal care props could offer an exciting extension of their interest, further deepening their empathy, knowledge of health, and understanding of living things.
