Counting Like Pirates

Program Name: Preschool

The children in the preschool room have been working vigorously on enhancing their numeracy skills in a variety of different ways. One of the activities the children engaged in consisted of laminated paper with a pot of gold with numbers on it and plastic golden coins. Before we got started, the children enhanced their imaginative play skills to pretend they were pirates, as they put on their pretend pirate hat and boots. After, educator Adeena explained how this counting game was to be played. First, the coin pots with numbers on them were sporadically placed onto the table, not in a particular order. Once that was completed, the numbers 1-10 that are displayed on the laminated paper pot of gold are identified of the max amount of coins that can fit into the pot itself.

Now we can start our number game. The children enhanced their social skills as they emphasized turn taking by going around the table picking a pot of gold of their choice. Once picked, the children used their critical thinking skills to identify what number was labelled on the pot of gold. They then proceeded to take their coins and counted until they reached the number they discovered. Emma and Zoe took their thinking skills even further as they took a pot of gold that had the number of how many gold coins they had left in their pile.

This process was repeated until we had only one pot of gold left on the table. The last pot of gold on the table was done together as a group as the children discovered the number, then worked together to place the coins until they reached the number they discovered together. At the end of the activity, the children felt a sense of accomplishment and belonging as they clapped together for doing such a great job with helping educator Adeena put the right amount of coins into the pots.
