In early October as we began talking about fall and Thanksgiving, the School-age 1 children participated in a fun and creative activity, making their own turkeys. Using different shape cut-outs, glue, eyes, feather and their imagination, children made their own colourful thanksgiving turkey. They carefully glued their googly eyes and decorated the feather to give their turkey unique personalities. No turkeys were similar. Some children decided to give their turkey thick fur while some had numbers of eyes. While creating the turkey, the children explored important math and fine motor concepts. They identified and named shapes such as circles for body, triangle for beak. They also practiced using glue and their pincer grip as they were putting the eyes on their turkeys. Also strengthening their hand eye coordination and fine motor control. Together we talked about thanksgiving and how it started. Children also shared what they were thankful for and made thanksgiving cards for themselves and their family members. Through this creative activity, the School-age 1 children engaged in learning across multiple areas; math, art, social emotional development and language development. Activities like this support children’s growing curiosity, confidence and understanding of the world around them.
