During this month, the preschoolers at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Patrick enthusiastically engaged in a hands-on sensory and imaginative play experience as they created their very own construction site in the turf tray. The educator introduced sand mixed with shaving foam to act as “cement,” sparking curiosity and excitement among the children. Using blocks as bricks, the children carefully built structures while exploring how materials could be used in different ways.
As the play evolved, the children independently searched around the classroom for tractors, cars, and other construction vehicles to enhance their project. This demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and collaboration as they worked together to transform the provocation into a realistic construction site. The sensory experience of mixing and touching the “cement” encouraged exploration through texture, while the use of loose parts supported fine motor development and imaginative thinking.
Throughout the activity, the children engaged in meaningful conversations with peers, sharing ideas, negotiating roles, and expanding their understanding of construction and community helpers. They showed persistence while balancing blocks, transporting materials, and creating roads and building areas for their vehicles.
This learning experience supported several developmental areas, including sensory exploration, social collaboration, communication, creativity, and cognitive problem-solving. The children demonstrated great pride in their work and remained engaged for extended periods of time, showing how open-ended provocations inspire deeper learning through play.
