The infants at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Patrick have discovered, and love the sound of the metal role play sink when they drop it or bang on it, and Tai’s coffee tin drums. Shannon brought both outside with two sets of symbols, three drum sticks and tied three pie pans onto the fence. The infants explored the different items which made similar sounds. Paxton and Logan held two drum sticks or utensils, (from the playground) and would alternate the items to play the symbols and metal drums. Professional drummers in the making! Ramona explored hitting the pie pans and the coffee tins, but then went over and played the big musical bars across the playground, to add the sounds to our drums and symbols. In the morning the toddlers joined in and played and explored the music as well. Nelly (From toddler 1) passed Shannon wooden spoons and drum sticks so Shannon could play the drums and instruments with her and the other children. So sweet Nelly, thank you for joining me in the fun. The instruments were left out and more toddler came to explore. In the afternoon Shannon took more infants outside to explore the loud instrument. The preschoolers all stood at the fence and danced to the music this group of infants made. Zendaya explored the items first by looking at them in her hands from all angles. Zendaya hit a coffee tin once and the pie pans on the fences. Thaniel explored every item and even hit two drum sticks together creating a new sound. I wonder which sound was your favourite. Audrey figured out how the symbols work, as she held one in each hand and banged them together. She also shook the fence which made the pie pans bang against the fence, creating more sounds and music. So clever! Together Shannon played as well and showed how hitting the grass, pavement and wooden planks made different sounds. She also sang the song “Clang, clang, riddle bing bang”, as the infants rocked out. This helped to teach language and new words, as well as using our senses to hear the different sounds we created and the cause and effect of how each item was manipulated. To extend this activity we will follow the interest of sound and do more sound related activities. We formed an infant rock band in no time. Can’t wait till our next show!
