This month the Preschool 2 classroom at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Patrick, began focusing more intentionally on emotional development and helping children build confidence in recognizing, expressing, and understanding their feelings. As the children continue growing socially and emotionally, we noticed many meaningful opportunities to support problem solving, communication, empathy, and self regulation through everyday classroom experiences and play based learning.
Throughout the month, the children explored emotions through a variety of hands on and interactive activities. Using mirrors, emotion boards, photographs, classroom visuals, and group discussions. The children practiced making facial expressions and identifying emotions such as happiness, sadness, frustration, excitement, and surprise. These activities encouraged the children to reflect on their own feelings while also learning how to recognize emotions in others. Together, we explored calming strategies including deep breathing, asking for help, taking turns, and using kind words when solving problems with peers.
One of the children’s favourite experiences was creating our classroom emotion board by taking photos of themselves showing different feelings. This meaningful activity helped children connect real emotions to facial expressions while building self awareness and confidence. We also practiced social problem solving skills during moments of sharing and turn taking by encouraging children to use phrases such as, “Stop, it’s my turn,” and independently use timers to support patience and fairness.
As we continue this journey, we will keep building on emotional literacy through stories, creative experiences, sensory play, and daily conversations that encourage children to express themselves in safe and positive ways. As educators we will continue creating opportunities for children to feel seen, heard, and supported, we are all working together to foster a classroom environment built on kindness, empathy, belonging, and connection.
