Preschool 2

Gross motor play is widely recognized as a foundational building block for a preschooler’s physical, cognitive, and social-emotional growth. On a rainy day, when outdoor play was not possible, the Preschool 2 children at RisingOaks Early Learning | John Sweeney were given an exciting opportunity to continue their active learning indoors. Together, we transformed the classroom into a mini gym, creating a rich environment for movement, exploration, and collaboration.

A variety of open-ended equipment was set out, including a balance board, twister disc board, stepper, inner thigh exercisers, push-up tools, an elastic strap, a Pilates ring, and a pedal trainer. Rather than showing the children how each item is typically used, educators intentionally allowed space for the children to explore freely and create their own ideas through play. The children began by carefully observing the equipment. They touched the surfaces, turned the items over, checked different sides, and watched closely to understand how each piece moved. This initial exploration demonstrated curiosity, problem-solving, and thoughtful inquiry as the children made sense of unfamiliar materials.

As confidence grew, the children began experimenting with movement. They watched their peers and tried new ideas inspired by one another. Jenesis stepped onto the push-up tools and proudly said, “I can stand here!” showing balance and confidence. Rosie climbed inside the Pilates ring and invited Florence to join her. Together, they carefully moved around the classroom, matching their walking speed and supporting one another so they would not fall. Their play reflected cooperation, communication, and shared problem-solving. Hunter pulled the elastic strap against Caden and Ilija and confidently declared, “I’m strong!” This moment showed physical strength, self-awareness, and social interaction. Throughout the experience, children invited peers into their play, negotiated roles, and adapted their movements together. Laughter, joy, encouragement, and teamwork filled the room.

Through this mini gym experience, the children strengthened their gross motor skills, balance, coordination, and body awareness. Equally important, they developed creativity, confidence, and social connections. The children were observant, keen, and imaginative, often spreading their creative ideas to others. This rainy day became a meaningful learning opportunity, reminding us that when children are trusted to lead their play, learning becomes joyful, powerful, and deeply engaging—no matter the weather. We will continue to provide the children with more opportunities to explore this environment and look forward to seeing how these curious and creative learners express and achieve their own unique ways of playing and learning.
