Mixing Colours

Preschool 2

In the Preschool 2 room at Rising Oaks | John Sweeney, the past couple of months have been exciting. The children have been creating paintings in the classroom and have observed how mixing single paint colours to infusing all the paint colours together, creates a different colour. The children continued asking for more paper to see if the results were the same each time they made a different picture. Their curious minds were eager to experiment and they were very creative.

During gathering time, the children were engaged in a book about mixing colours. The book detailed how we mix primary colours and secondary colours. The educators decided to continue the science experiment so the children could see the end result of mixing two colours together to create a new colour!

As we all participated in this fun activity, the children gathered around educator Toni, where she displayed milk, food colouring and soap. During this experiment, we needed the children’s help.  The children added drops of different food colouring around the tray of milk to see the colourful results.  Once we finished the adding of the colours, we asked all the children, “what will happen when we add the soap to the colours?”  Natalie and Grayson responded, “the colours will mix!”  Once the soap was added to the colours, all the colours mixed together creating a variety of colours in addition to the primary colours that we started with.

The children were amazed at the results of the science experiment!  As we continued our colour experiments throughout the week, we had multiple tables set up where we were mixing colours and the educators encouraged the children to explore on their own where they used their creative minds to design wonderful, colourful creations!
