This month in School age 1 at RisingOaks | John Sweeney, we learned about Remembrance Day. The children began to spark an interest in the celebration as they admired the poppies being hung around the school. The children discussed and shared opinions involving the different topics they learned about Remembrance Day during class time. Educator Julia explained to the children why people celebrate Remembrance Day and the different ways of celebrating. The children began to ask a variety of questions about Remembrance Day including, how it was celebrated in Kitchener. Educators Julia and Kara used technology as a resource to provide the children with online books and videos, which further explained the reason for Remembrance Day and why it is so important to celebrate it. Together we learned that on November 11th, 2023 Kitchener has a Remembrance Day Parade (that was scheduled to begin on Ontario Street and travel along King Street and Frederick Street to the cenotaph. Followed by a Ceremony that was located at the Cenotaph at Duke Street which was scheduled at started 10:30 a.m. At 11:00 am there would be a Country wide (which includes Kitchener) moment of silence in honour of those who served our country.
After a class discussion, we all agreed that Remembrance Day is a day to recognize, celebrate and be grateful for the men an women who fought for our freedom. The School age 1 children created poppies that illustrated what the children are thankful for. Anthony said “I'm thankful because I have my family”. Noah said “I'm thankful for my school." Educator Julia said “I'm thankful for freedom and health care”.
