After a visit from our local firefighters, the children became very interested in firefighters, fire trucks, and the important work they do in our community. During the visit, the firefighters showed us their fire truck, talked about some of the tools they use, and gave the children Jr. firefighter badge stickers. The children were excited to explore the truck and learn more about how firefighters help people during emergencies.
Their interest continued long after the visit, to extend on this interest, we transformed our dramatic play area into a Fire Station. The children enjoyed dressing up as firefighters, putting on boots and helmets, talking through walkie-talkies, and responding to pretend emergencies around the classroom. They worked together to put out fires, rescue animals, and help keep everyone safe.
As they played, the children became familiar with vocabulary relevant to firefighting such as hose, axe, ladder, hydrant, siren, helmet, and fire extinguisher. They often used these words during their play as they took on different roles and created their own rescue missions.
We also had many conversations about emergencies and learned that 911 is the number to call when someone needs help. The children discussed different situations that may require emergency assistance and learned that 911 should only be called during a real emergency.
The Fire Station became one of the children's favourite areas in the classroom. Through dramatic play, they explored new vocabulary, practiced working together, and developed a deeper understanding of the important role firefighters play in helping our community.
