Program Name: School-age 1

This month in School- Age 1, the group continued their interest in creative art activities. Mona set up a large table with a big brown sheet, added different coloured paints, and then covered the table with transparent plastic sheets to provide a sensory outlet to the children as this provided an opportunity to see the colours clearly as they mixed them.

The children eagerly approached the art activity and were immediately captivated by the colours. They began mixing different colours on the transparent sheets, observing the fascinating transformation of primary colours into secondary colours. The act of mixing colours sparked their sense of wonder and curiosity, allowing them to explore cause and effect relationships.

During the exploration, some children decided to further engage with the paint by moving the transparent sheets and engaging in hand print painting. Mona added feathers, pipe cleaners, and glitter for more exploration. They spent a good amount of time mixing the colours together, developing their fine motor skills by hand painting with lots of giggling and laughter around the table. Lincoln, Ryan, and Kinley decided to dye their hair. Lincoln said “I will dye my hair to show it to my mom.” This unexpected use of materials showcased their creativity and willingness to think outside the box. They kept adding glitter to their hair with lots of giggling and laughter.

Through this art activity the children developed many skills such as cognitive skills by introducing the concept of colours, specifically primary and secondary colours. They strengthened their fine motor skills by using different materials and exploring the paint with their hands. They also developed their self-expression by using the paint to dye their hair which allowed them to express their own characteristics.

This activity was fun and provided many learning opportunities. I wonder what else we can do with paint…
