In special recognition of pride this month, our group has been striving to recognize and embrace important values of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
To further explore these topics of self-identity and belonging, our toddlers were invited to engage in a self-portrait art activity. During this experience they used paint sticks to explore their unique features and strengthen fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, creativity, and self-awareness.
As they worked, each child deepened their sense of identity and confidence, expressing how they saw themselves. This activity also sparked great opportunities for the toddlers to understand that every child is special, valued, and celebrated for who they are.
The children quickly recognized their own faces upon seeing their pictures, feeling a sense of belonging and recognizing their unique facial features. While exploring the materials, someone noted, “my picture, look glasses!”, happily observing their portrait and demonstrating self-awareness of their own appearance.
Together, we are fostering a community where children learn to appreciate both their own individuality and the uniqueness of others.
