This month, our school-age group explored food, creativity and independence through a “Make your own pizza” experience. The children were full of curiosity, from the moment we started planning by discussing the ingredients for pizza. The moment they saw the veggies, cheese and sauces laid on the table, children gathered around. Iggy said,” Can I put bacon on mine?”. I responded by saying,” absolutely! It’s your pizza, your creation. Chayce observed the tray thoughtfully and said, “I want to make a spicy one for fun”. The group laughed together and shared ideas about what makes a “Perfect pizza”. While spreading sauce and choosing toppings children were deeply engaged in problem-solving and decision-making. Some counted how many Pepperoni they added and, while others compared whose pizza had the most colours. The conversations naturally encouraged teamwork as children were sharing the trays and passing the items respectfully. After preparing our pizzas, we all went to the kitchen and looked at the oven settings. Sophia and Fred showcased amazing balancing as they walked to the kitchen holding big trays. Chayce helped in putting those trays in the oven. Through this experience, the children showed engagement by taking pride in their own creation. This activity supported fine-motor control, creative thinking and communication. Children not only made pizzas, but built confidence, independence and connections with each other.
