This month, the children celebrated Mother’s Day by creating special heart-shaped sensory keepsakes using cornstarch and baking soda. The children enjoyed exploring the soft and stretchy texture while shaping and decorating their hearts with excitement and creativity.
To make the keepsakes extra meaningful, each child added their fingerprints in the shape of a heart onto the heart-shaped cornstarch creation. The children were proud to make their unique prints and create something special for their moms.
We also asked the children a variety of interesting and thoughtful questions about their moms and recorded their answers on a “Mom’s Questionnaire.” The children eagerly shared funny, sweet, and loving responses about their moms, creating many smiles and joyful conversations throughout the activity.
This activity supported sensory exploration, creativity, and fine motor development through hands-on play and art experiences. Making fingerprint heart designs encouraged self-expression and helped the children feel connected to their families by creating a personalized keepsake filled with love and care.
The Mom’s Questionnaire promoted language development, communication skills, and emotional expression. By answering questions about their moms, the children practiced sharing their thoughts, memories, and feelings while strengthening their understanding of family relationships and appreciation for loved ones.
Moving forward, we will continue to provide opportunities for children to express themselves through sensory activities, art, and meaningful conversations. We hope to encourage more family-centered experiences that support creativity, emotional growth, and positive social connections.
