Sensory Play and Letter Recognition

Preschool 2

Recently in the Preschool 2 room we started learning about letters. The children have been exploring the letter puzzles and the educators set up an art experience for the children to do some painting with letters as well. We noticed that the children are interested in the letters in their names. Some children could recognize the first letter of their name, and some children could spell their name. Next, we decided to do a sensory play activity with letters. We brought out the wooden trays that have letters etched into them and some sand to the table. We poured the sand into the cups, and the children tried to fill up the carved letters with the sand. Some children noticed that they had some letters that belongs to their names, and they were so excited to share this with other peers and the educators.

Based on this observation, the educators think the children are developing their letter cognitive skills and it is a great opportunity for them to start learning with their names. We are doing different activities for children to learning about letters. We decorated our alphabet on the wall together and we fixed the letter puzzles together with children.

We will continue offering different kinds of activities to help children develop their cognitive skills with letters and shapes.
