Creating Vehicles Through OctoPlay

School-age 1

In the past few weeks, the School-age 1 children have been interested in exploring and creating with our octoblocks. The children engaged in imaginative play by making different types of transportation such as motorcycles and cars. Nathan made a motorcycle by counting each octoblock so that he would have an even amount on each side. This helped to enhance his numeracy skills as he practiced his counting. “I have 5 sides for 5 people,” Nathan said. He then proceeded to add handle bars to make sure that it resembled the same features as a real motorcycle.

Philippe enjoyed building a car. “I made a Honda civic,” he said. Philippe continued to build his Honda civic by using his knowledge of cars, such as how many doors, wheels, and types of exterior details. “This is a bumper”. He was able to describe to the educator that the bumper belongs at the back of the car. This enhances his social interactions, and his communication with his peers by expressing their cognitive thinking and understanding of how things are put together.

This experience enhances their confidence, cooperation, and leadership skills to build up friendships with their peers. They expressed their communication skills throughout their conversations by asking questions, answering, and describing their ideas to each other. This play also shows how creative, innovative, and inclusive these children were by being able to share and learn what each other are creating, as well as feeling that sense of belonging.

I wonder how we can further explore the topic of vehicles and learn about different ways of transportation?
