Loose Parts Structures

School-age 1

In the past month the children expressed their creativity through using their fine motor skills and loose parts in order to make structures. They were provided with various sizes of Styrofoam balls and toothpicks in order to provide various choices in building their creations.

Daniel collected the small size balls and joined them together making a big circle.
His structure was a representation of numeracy and imagination. He counted the balls and found that he used eight of them. Harvey decided to make a bunny with a cotton tail. While he was working on his project, he was able to explain which part of the bunny's body he was applying. Meanwhile, Leanne made a spider by connecting one bigger ball with little ones, applying many toothpicks to join them together. Leanne explained that the big ball is a body of a spider and the small are his legs.

The activity was a great experience for the children to work and create with different materials. It helped them enhance their imagination and creativity through unique designs. By using their fingers, they had an opportunity to improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They also used their expressive language by having a group conversation about their thoughts and ideas, and explaining their creations as they made them.
