Fruit Salad

Preschool

Over the past few weeks, the children in the preschool room have shown a growing interest in making fruit salad together as a group. This excitement began after listening to the song “Fruit Salad” and sharing their favourite fruits from home. Inspired by their enthusiasm, we decided to create our very own rainbow fruit salad to enjoy as an afternoon snack.

The next day, we gathered as a group to brainstorm and list all the fruits the children love to eat. We came up with many great ideas: strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, and so much more. From there, we talked about the colours of the rainbow and matched fruits to each colour. Together, we decided on:

 Red: Strawberries/Raspberries
 Orange: Clementines/Oranges
 Yellow: Pineapple/Bananas
 Green: Kiwi
 Blue: Blueberries
 Purple: Grapes

To make this experience even more meaningful, educator Adeena invited families to take part by creating a sign-up sheet where parents could choose a fruit to contribute. The outcome was amazing that we collected a full bin of fresh fruit to use for our special project.

When the day finally came to make our colourful fruit salad, the children were buzzing with excitement. Educator Adeena washed all the fruit beforehand, and the children washed their hands and came to the table when it was their turn to help. They learned how to safely use butter knives to cut their fruit into smaller pieces, building confidence, and strengthening fine motor skills.

As each child added their fruit to the large bowl, they practiced turn-taking, sharing, and working cooperatively toward a shared goal. They explored different textures, colours, and smells, sparking conversations about their favourite fruits, and encouraging curiosity about healthy foods. This hands-on experience also helped deepen their understanding of healthy eating and where our food comes from.

The children were incredibly proud of their teamwork and couldn’t wait to enjoy the delicious, vibrant fruit salad they helped create for afternoon snack time!
