Investigating Risk

Preschool

The children were observed engaging in adventurous physical play as they confidently jumped off tall stumps, balanced carefully along uneven wooden beams, and climbed structures. These moments highlighted their developing physical abilities, spatial awareness, and a strong willingness to take on new challenges. Recognizing this interest in risk-taking, educator Adeena extended the experience by introducing a wood and nails activity designed to offer a different kind of challenge. She set up a large tree stump outdoors and placed nails partially into the surface, providing the children with real hammers to practice hitting the nails into the wood. This activity encouraged controlled risk-taking, requiring focus, patience, and fine motor skills, while also supporting their sense of independence and capability. To ensure safety, children were guided through how to handle the hammers correctly and were provided with protective safety glasses to shield their eyes from any potential hazards. The experience offered a meaningful opportunity for the children to explore real tools in a safe, supervised environment, building confidence, persistence, and an early understanding of tool safety and responsibility.
