Rebuilding

School-age 1

The children in School-age group 1 have spent the last few months “travelling” the world. Each month, we are aiming to visit a different country across the globe. November brought us to Jamaica. The educators in the program decided to use this “trip” as a meaningful learning experience and highlight the devastation that had just occurred when a hurricane swept through Jamaica.

Using the iPad – we researched videos, pictures, and information regarding hurricanes and the effects of this natural disaster. We also highlighted humanitarian efforts as people from all over the globe have come together to provide relief in the form of food, water, clothing, and clean-up efforts.

The educators brought forward the idea of “rebuilding” by designing our own Jamaica. The children each incorporated their own ideas into the blueprint, such as a school for children to learn, a store to shop for food, and a gas station for other supplies.

Overall, this experience provided the children some insight into devastation that can occur around the world – yet the empowerment that can happen when the world comes together.
