Toddlers have been enjoying getting ready to go outside and take advantage of the snow and the chilly weather. They rush up to their cubbies and start taking out their coats, boots, snow pants, and other belongings as soon as they hear its time to go outdoors.

With delight, Julia began removing her coats and snow pants from her cubby and said, "Let's go outside!" She started putting on her winter clothing. Flip flop over the top, her coat was on. When it came time to zip the zipper, she requested for assistance. When she was prepared, she approached a different child to offer help, displaying how to put on their winter clothing. The children are developing good problem-solving skills by helping their peers and figuring out the order of dressing to engage in outdoor play.

Children are learning to be independent and showing their social skills while helping each other. Once they get ready to go outside they for sure know what to do. They show ability to follow instructions and line up against the wall to go outside. It’s amazing to see how consistency and routine makes such a big difference in their day to day life.

As an educator, our goal is to nurture children’s healthy development and support their growing sense of self. Pedagogical documentation supports educators in both including child development in their view, but also looking beyond development to capture broader aspects of experience for reflection. We will be posting some documentation at the children’s level for them to observe and revisit their successes, so that the children continue to work towards independent dressing.
